2021 Ironman is 'GO' on 9th of October

posted Jul 7, 2021, 6:35 AM by Peter Belbin

Yep, the word is that the needed permissions have been obtained, and planning is moving ahead for the Ironman to happen on the 9th of October.

Essentially the course details are the same as last time it was held, based in The Woodlands, with the bike course extending down to the south end of the Hardy Tollway where it meets beltway 610.

2021 Ironman Texas April 24th POSTPONED

posted Mar 18, 2021, 7:01 AM by Peter Belbin

It appears that because the event used roadways within Harris County, that, because their COVID threat system has reached the most severe level (1 - Stay Home), that this has triggered being unable to host the ironman event.

So, the event is currently listed as 'postponed' by Ironman.  I've seen some mention of possibly hosting the event during the October timeframe.

Last year, the same thing happened, but was eventually unable to be held, and was cancelled outright.  Lets see what happens this time.

2020 ARRL Field Day

posted Jun 11, 2020, 6:08 AM by Peter Belbin

Ok.  So, the bottom line is that we are 'combining' with NARS 'virtually'.

This means, aside from the testing session that will take place at the NARS host fire station, everyone else will operate their equipment from home (or, arrange to visit someone's home), make contacts using their own callsign, but, when logs are submitted, identify the club affiliation as being that of NARS.

Given the community spread of COVID-19 continues to steadily increase, this is a sensible way to participate.

I would be quite happy to host a video chat where we can meet and discuss what we are trying to do.  I know that some people in the club are trying their hand at packet radio.  Perhaps this will be a good opportunity for more of us to dig out our packet equipment and give that a try too?

Also, we are now meeting ever 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month.

Details regarding how to join the meeting are posted via the club email group, so make sure you register to get those messages!

Hey there folks.  Yes, we are considering what to do regarding the meeting we would normally hold this week.

I am opening a discussion item in the group forum where we can discuss it.

Please look for that, and respond there.

Stay well, Stay healthy!

If you have not heard, both the Woodforest Bank TRI and Memorial Hermann Ironman events have been *postponed* with new dates not published at this time.

2020 Jan 19 Houston Marathon needs help

posted Nov 19, 2019, 6:07 AM by Peter Belbin

The Houston Marathon is perhaps one of the largest single-day events in the area, and it has needs for more radio operators.  Whether you're new to working sports events or not, the Houston Marathon is a great opportunity for you.  The organizer of amateur radio support for this event is Lee Roy Gaspard, and I'm sure that he will be very thankful for your help.  For more information and the option to register to help, visit: http://www.hmhams.org

2018 ARRL Field Day June 23

posted Jun 1, 2018, 10:54 PM by Peter Belbin

Hello there!

Planning for the 2018 ARRL Field Day is underway.

Meeting time: tbd (it will probably start around 10am or so)

Duration: tbd  ( it will go probably until around 6pm or so)

The main activity is that of bringing along your gear, set something up, and see if you can operate (make contacts with other stations).  eg: if you needed to go to a location on a temporary basis and provide assistance.  Beyond that, we're in it to have some fun, and hopefully garner some curiosity from non radio operators.

As a 'group effort', John and others are working on resourcing an end-fed vertical antenna for HF, with the support being provided by a weather balloon (or similar).  Stay tuned.  If we do this, it will need some people on hand to help, both with putting it up, and, with recovering, and possibly, afterwards, releasing the balloon with a gps tracker, to see where it goes.

Our involvement typically is only on Saturday.  However, for those that are keen to take a look at how other clubs 'do it', you are welcome to visit the NARS effort at Burroughs Park (eg: on Sunday morning).  They will be active the entire 24 hour period, from what I understand.
